Whangamata, The Coromandel

The Coromandel peninsula is a laid-back paradise a few hours’ drive from Auckland. It’s known for its beaches, rainforests and peaceful atmosphere. The beachy town of Whangamata is home to one of New Zealand’s prettiest white-sand beaches, and there’s easy access to tons of value-packed activities like an awesome surf break, stand-up paddle boarding and rainforest walks. Whangamata is a great option for travellers who want a chilled out place to stay while enjoying access to the most famous Coromandel attractions like Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove.

Napier, Hawke’s Bay

The art deco architecture of Napier makes it one of the most unique places for sightseeing in New Zealand. It’s also in the heart of one of New Zealand’s primary winemaking and farming regions, the Hawke’s Bay. A short drive south from Napier gets you to Te Mata Peak, overlooking the whole region. Travellers can walk, drive or cycle up Te Mata peak, and enjoy panoramic views over the highlights of the region, all the way across to Cape Kidnappers. Wine lovers will enjoy trying the Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon from local wineries.  And it’s well worth taking a drive out to Waimarama beach to explore one of the most underrated beaches anywhere in New Zealand.

Recommend for: Unique architecture, wineries, walks.

Northland & The Bay of Islands

Northland has one of the warmest climates in New Zealand and is packed with cultural landmarks. The region is most famous for the Bay of Islands off its eastern coast, but on the less-travelled west coast there’s also plenty of cultural and sightseeing destinations to explore. Travellers looking for a breathtaking nature and cultural experience will love Waipoua Forest. It’s home to the largest ancient Kauri trees in the country, including the massive Tane Mahuta—2,000 years old and still growing. On the northernmost tip of the island lies Cape Reinga, a sacred place in Maori culture. Northland is a dream spot for travellers keen to experience Kiwi culture and nature at its best.

Recommend for: Maori culture, nature lovers, exploring.

Raglan, Waikato

Raglan has somehow managed to maintain a pretty low profile compared to other destinations in New Zealand. A beautiful coastal town with black-sand beaches and a famous surf break, it’s the spiritual home of surfing in New Zealand. But there’s plenty to do for travellers who aren’t keen to jump on a surfboard: cafes serving great coffee, shops and art galleries. Raglan has its own unique character and will appeal to travellers looking for a laid back vibe with loads to explore.

Recommend for: Surf beaches, cool township, unique culture.

Martinborough, South Wairarapa

The picturesque town of Martinborough is easily accessed by car from Wellington, and is located in one of the best wine-producing regions in New Zealand. There are more than 20 wineries to explore in and around Martinborough. There’s a range of boutique accommodation available and lots of cafes, restaurants and heritage buildings to see in this beautiful small town. Despite being only an hour’s drive from Wellington, Martinborough feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Perfect for the cooler months.
